Golden Visa Portugal program: benefits from its educational system

One of the major benefits of the Golden Visa Portugal is the one of the best educational systems in Europe.  Since the year 2000, the OECD or Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the PISA or Program for International Student Assessment has reported that Portugal is the only country that has been consistently improving its student assessment scores in mathematics, science and literacy and has called Portugal the “rising star of international education.”

Reforms of the Portuguese education system

This is because since 1970, when the dictatorship in Portugal ended, the government has been steadily increasing the budget for education to be able to continually institute radical educational reforms particularly investing heavily in more public schools and in the people who are part of the educational community – the mothers, children from 0 to 6 years old, and the teachers at all levels.

The foundation for these reforms is the change in the socioeconomic and cultural status of its citizens, particularly in under-served communities, and the decentralization and autonomy of the school system from the national government to the different municipalities to allow them to develop a school curriculum which is suited to their constituents needs.

The democratization of education was also a great factor in Portugal’s educational reforms. Education became available to all citizens. Today, that translates to parents, particularly mothers who are educated and therefore want the same for their children. At the same time, the government increased the number of day care centers and pre-schools and increased the benefits of both parents, including fathers, in terms of caring for their children during their infancy and early childhood.

Teacher training is also a big factor in the great improvement of the Portugal educational system. Whether it is to teach pre-school, primary or secondary levels, a teacher must have a Master’s Degree.

Lastly, there is a major effort by the Portuguese government to decrease then number of dropouts from the pre-school to tertiary levels.

All these reforms and budget increases have translated to Portugal’s higher education system being ranked the 35th best in the world in the first edition of the QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings.
